OMAHA, Neb.--  In a best of 3 series the Virginia Cavaliers came out on top 4-2 in the last game of the season.

Unlike the previous 2 contests, the pitcher’s duel was over in the first inning of the finale.

The Commodores of Vanderbilt struck early with 2 runs in the 1st after Dansby Swanson hit a ground out RBI to 3B and

Zander Wiel hit an RBI double down the LF line scoring Bryan Reynolds and Rhett Wiseman, respectively.


Virginia answered back in the top of the 4th when slugger Pavin Smith smashed a 1-0 pitch over the LC wall and tacked on another in the fifth when Smith drove in Adam Haseley who had reached base on a walk. The Cavaliers finished their scoring in the 7th when 3B Kenny Towns singled up the middle to drive in Haseley. Towns was later caught stealing to end the inning.


Virginia’s Brandon Waddell earned the win with 7 innings of 4-hit baseball while Nathan Kirby got the save, pitching the last 2 innings.


Walker Buhler was the SP for Vanderbilt allowing 2 runs in the 4th inning before giving way to John Kilichowski. Kilichowski is credited with the loss after giving up a run in his 1 1/3 innings. Other relievers for the Commodores included Collin Snider, Ben Bowden and Kyle Wright who finished the game allowing 1 run in 4 innings pitched.

 

 

 

 



College baseball couldn’t ask for two better 2015 CWS Finals representatives. And in the best college championship format, we will get to do it all again in 2016.


Congratulations to Coach Corbin and the Vanderbilt Commodores on an outstanding season and congratulations to Coach Brian O’Connor and the Virginia Cavaliers on winning the National Championship.
